Vinyl & Aluminum Siding Painting Services by Northern Star Painters

Welcome to Northern Star Painters, the vinyl and aluminum siding painting specialists for homeowners across Northern Virginia and Washington DC. We are a Virginia Class A licensed and DC licensed contractor with an in-house crew — never subcontracted — and we paint exclusively with vinyl-safe acrylic systems from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore. Whether your siding is chalking, fading, or just dated, the process is the same: free in-home estimate within 48 hours, bonding-primer-first sequence with line-item pricing, and a 2-year workmanship warranty in writing.

Vinyl is unforgiving. The wrong paint warps the siding by trapping heat, voids manufacturer warranties, and fails inside 18 months. The right system — vinyl-safe colors with a bonding primer — lasts 8–12 years on a Northern Virginia exterior. We never paint vinyl darker than its original color (the freeze-thaw rules out heat absorption), and we document the vinyl-safe LRV value on every quote so your siding warranty stays valid. 32 cities across the DC and NoVA region.

Our Vinyl & Aluminum Siding Painting Process

Six steps that turn vinyl siding painting from a warranty-voiding gamble into an 8-to-12-year finish.

Step 1

Color Selection (Vinyl-Safe Only)

Vinyl siding has a maximum LRV (light reflectance value) that the manufacturer warranty allows — usually 50 or higher to prevent heat absorption. We bring large-format Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore decks pre-filtered for vinyl-safe colors only, paint 2×2 ft sample patches in your light, and document the chosen LRV on the quote. Going darker than the original voids most major warranties (Certainteed, Mastic, Alside).

Step 2

Pressure Wash & Clean

Vinyl will not hold paint over chalking, mildew, or pollen. Day one is a low-pressure (1,200–1,500 PSI) wash of every siding face with a TSP solution to cut chalk and mildew. We use a soft-wash technique near windows and trim joints so we do not force water behind the siding. The substrate gets 24–48 hours to dry completely before any primer touches it.

Step 3

Surface Prep & Repair

Loose, warped, or cracked vinyl panels get replaced before paint — painting over a damaged panel locks the defect into the finished wall. Chalky sections get a second scrub with TSP. Any holes from old satellite mounts or decorative attachments get filled with vinyl-compatible caulk. Aluminum siding gets light sanding on glossy or chalky areas so primer bonds.

Step 4

Apply Bonding Primer

Vinyl and aluminum both need a bonding primer — standard acrylic primer fails on the slick, non-porous surface. We use Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond or Benjamin Moore Insl-X Stix on every project, applied at manufacturer-spec coverage. Spot prime any heavily chalked or repaired sections; full coat on previously unpainted siding. Primer bonds the topcoat into the substrate; skip it and the new color peels in 18 months.

Step 5

Apply Vinyl-Safe Topcoat

Two coats of vinyl-safe 100% acrylic latex — never standard exterior latex — brushed and rolled by hand. Spray-only application leaves coverage gaps in the siding lap profile and fails warranty inspection. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald, or Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior, in colors within the vinyl-safe LRV range. Properly applied vinyl coatings hold finish for 8–12 years; aluminum holds 10–15.

Step 6

Walk-Through Inspection

The last step is a walk with you. We tour every painted lap, soffit, and trim run together with a flashlight, looking for missed laps, drips on adjacent trim, or thin spots in the lap shadows. Anything we find gets fixed on the spot before we sign off. You get the 2-year workmanship warranty in writing, a touch-up jar with the exact vinyl-safe color, and a record of the LRV value used for your warranty file.

How Much Does Vinyl Siding Painting Cost in Northern Virginia & DC?

Most 2,000–2,500 sq ft vinyl-sided homes in Northern Virginia and Washington DC run $4,500 to $7,800 for a full repaint — typically 60–70% less than full siding replacement ($14,000–$22,000). The most accurate way to know your number is a free in-home estimate.

  • Wall area and stories — total siding face square footage plus scaffolding for second-floor walls
  • Existing condition — chalking severity, panel damage, fade level, any panels that need replacement before paint
  • Bonding primer scope — full coat vs spot prime depending on previous coating and chalking
  • Topcoat brand and grade — Sherwin-Williams Duration vs Emerald vs Benjamin Moore Aura, all vinyl-safe
  • Trim, soffits, and accents — downspouts, fascia, window trim, shutters, doors
  • LRV restriction handling — color matching within the manufacturer-allowed LRV range to keep warranty valid

The most accurate way to know your cost is a free in-home estimate.

When Should You Paint Your Vinyl or Aluminum Siding?

Vinyl gives plenty of warning before it fails — if you know what to look for.

  • Heavy chalking on the surface — when your hand comes back white after touching the siding, the topcoat has broken down and a fresh paint job lasts another 8–12 years
  • Faded or sun-bleached color — especially on south and west walls; paint refreshes the color in 5–7 days, vs $20K+ for full replacement
  • Outdated 1980s-90s pastel colors — instant style update for the cost of paint, not siding
  • Mismatched panels from past repairs — paint unifies the entire siding face into one continuous color
  • Resale or refinance approaching — fresh siding paint adds 3–8% to most listing prices in the DMV
  • Insurance or HOA refresh deadline — cheaper and faster than replacement, often acceptable to HOAs as upkeep

A few situations say wait. Severely warped or melted siding from a heat source needs replacement — paint will not fix that. Vinyl under 5 years old usually still has factory color life left. HOA covenants that explicitly prohibit painted siding override our recommendation — we check before quoting. We will tell you when you should not paint your siding as honestly as when you should.

Why Northern Virginia & DC Homeowners Choose Northern Star for Siding Painting

✅ In-House Crew, Never Subcontracted

Every Northern Star painter is on our payroll, trained on vinyl-specific prep and bonding-primer application, and accountable to our 2-year warranty. You will not meet a stranger on day one.

✅ Vinyl Warranty Awareness

We know the major siding warranties (Certainteed, Mastic, Alside, Royal). We paint within manufacturer-allowed LRV ranges and document everything so your warranty stays valid.

✅ Bonding Primer on Every Job

Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond or Benjamin Moore Insl-X Stix — never standard acrylic primer. The slick non-porous surface needs a bonding primer or the topcoat peels in 18 months.

✅ Hand-Brushed, Never Spray-Only

Spray-only application leaves coverage gaps in the lap shadows. We brush and roll every lap by hand so the finish is consistent on every face of the siding.

✅ 2-Year Workmanship Warranty

Written into every contract. If our work peels, blisters, or fails from workmanship within 24 months, we come back at no charge. Most painting contractors offer no warranty at all on siding.

✅ Same-Week Scheduling

Most siding projects start within 5–10 business days of contract signing. Weather-dependent (we will not paint below 50°F surface temperature), but we do not lose entire weeks to scheduling games.

Common Questions About Vinyl Siding Painting

Can vinyl siding really be painted?

Yes — but only with vinyl-safe acrylic paint over a bonding primer. Standard exterior latex traps heat against the siding, warps it, and voids most manufacturer warranties. Vinyl-safe paints stay within the manufacturer-allowed LRV (light reflectance value) range so the siding does not absorb more heat than it was designed for. Properly applied vinyl-safe coatings last 8–12 years on a Northern Virginia or Washington DC exterior; aluminum siding holds even longer at 10–15 years.

Will painting void my siding warranty?

Not if it is done right. Most major vinyl siding warranties (Certainteed, Mastic, Alside, Royal Building Products) explicitly allow paint as long as: (1) the new color stays within the manufacturer-allowed LRV range, (2) a bonding primer is used, and (3) the work is documented. We do all three on every project and provide written documentation for your warranty file.

How long does vinyl siding paint last?

Properly prepped and painted vinyl siding holds finish for 8–12 years. Aluminum siding holds 10–15 years because it does not expand and contract with temperature the way vinyl does. The variables are: prep quality (a good wash plus replacement of damaged panels), primer system (bonding primer is non-negotiable), topcoat grade (Sherwin-Williams Duration outlasts ProMar), color choice (light colors hide chalking longer), and sun exposure.

What is the prep process?

Pressure wash at 1,200–1,500 PSI with a TSP solution to cut chalking and mildew. Replace any warped, cracked, or melted panels. Sand any glossy or chalky aluminum surfaces. Fill old screw holes and decorative attachment holes with vinyl-compatible caulk. Spot-prime heavily chalked sections with bonding primer. Once everything is dry (24–48 hours), two coats of vinyl-safe acrylic latex go on by hand-brush and roller.

Is it cheaper than replacing siding?

Yes — typically 60–70% less than full siding replacement. A 2,000 sq ft home runs $4,500–$7,800 to paint vs $14,000–$22,000 to replace. Paint also takes 3–5 days vs 2–3 weeks for replacement, with no need to coordinate with your HOA or worry about damaged window trim during siding removal.

Can you paint vinyl darker than the original color?

No — this is the number-one rule of vinyl painting. Darker colors absorb more heat, expand the siding more than it was designed for, and warp it within one summer. We only paint vinyl in colors that match or lighten the original LRV. We bring vinyl-safe color decks pre-filtered for your specific siding type, so you do not have to guess which colors are safe.

How much does vinyl siding painting cost in NoVA and DC?

Most 2,000–2,500 sq ft vinyl-sided homes run $4,500–$7,800 for a full repaint, depending on wall area, condition of the existing siding, bonding-primer scope, and whether trim and shutters are included. Free in-home estimates with line-item pricing, 48-hour turnaround. We are transparent about every cost driver up front — no surprise add-ons mid-project.

Vinyl Siding Issues We Handle

Three failure modes show up on almost every vinyl-sided home in the Mid-Atlantic. We handle all three in a single project.

Heavy Chalking

When your hand comes back white after touching the siding, the topcoat binder has broken down from UV exposure. We pressure-wash with TSP, sometimes scrub by hand on heavy chalking, and apply bonding primer to lock the chalked surface before topcoat. Fresh paint lasts another 8–12 years.

Warped or Damaged Panels

Heat damage from grills, dryer vents, or dark colors warps vinyl panels permanently. Painting over damage locks the defect in. We cut out and replace warped sections with color-matched panels from the manufacturer, then paint the entire wall as one continuous surface.

Faded & Sun-Bleached Color

South and west walls fade first in the DMV. By year 10–15 the original color has shifted noticeably. Vinyl-safe acrylic coatings restore full color in a weekend and add 8–12 years of UV protection — cheaper than a single panel replacement.

2-Year Workmanship Warranty

Every vinyl and aluminum siding painting project from Northern Star Painters is backed by a written 2-year workmanship warranty. If our work peels, blisters, fails, or shows premature substrate warping within 24 months of project completion, we come back at no charge and make it right. The warranty is included in your contract; nothing to register, nothing to claim. Combined with $2 million in liability insurance, our Virginia Class A and DC contractor licenses, and our vinyl-safe color and primer system, it is the most complete coverage you can get on residential siding painting in the region.

The warranty does not cover failure caused by heat damage from external sources (grills, dryer vents, dark-colored cars parked against the siding), impact damage from outside causes, or warping from going darker than the manufacturer-allowed LRV — but those are exactly the issues we look for during the free in-home inspection, so they get flagged up front instead of catching you off guard a year later. Most painting contractors in Northern Virginia and DC offer no warranty at all on vinyl. Two years is the standard a serious crew should be willing to put in writing.
