Color Consultation Services by Northern Star Painters
Welcome to Northern Star Painters, the in-home color consultation specialists for homeowners across Northern Virginia and Washington DC. We are a Virginia Class A licensed and DC licensed painting contractor with a staff designer who walks your home, looks at your fixed elements, and builds a written palette in 60–90 minutes — no upsell, no pressure, no design school speak. Most consultations end with a different choice than the homeowner walked in with, because seeing the colors in your actual light is different than picking from a 2×2 inch chip.
Color is the single decision homeowners stall on most. Our consultation includes large-format Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore decks (500+ swatches), 11×14 peel-and-stick samples, and 2×2 ft test patches painted on your wall so you read the real color in real light. Whole-house palettes that flow room to room are the default, and we coordinate wall, trim, and accent colors as a unified set. 32 cities across NoVA and DC, $150 standalone fee — free when bundled with any paid painting project from us.
Our Color Consultation Process
Six steps that turn the most stressful decision in your project into the easiest.
Initial Conversation
Before we visit, we call (or text) for 15 minutes to understand the scope: rooms involved, current colors, what is staying (floor, cabinets, art), what is changing, and whether you have any inspiration photos. That conversation shapes which decks and sample sets we bring to the appointment so the visit is productive, not exploratory.
In-Home Visit
A staff designer (not a salesperson) spends 60–90 minutes in your home. We walk every room you want addressed, see your light at the time of day you live in the space, look at your fixed elements, and listen to what you love and what you do not. We bring deck books, peel-and-stick samples, and test-patch tools.
Assess Your Fixed Elements
The biggest mistake homeowners make with color is choosing it in isolation. We work outward from what is staying — flooring, cabinetry, fireplace surround, art, sofa — and build the palette around those undertones. A warm cherry floor wants a different white than a cool white oak floor, and we will not pick the wrong one.
Build a Whole-House Palette
Most consultations cover 3–5 rooms or a whole-house exterior. We build a coordinated palette: a primary wall color, a secondary or accent color, a trim and millwork color, and (where relevant) a ceiling color. Rooms flow into one another because the palette is designed as a set, not picked one room at a time.
Test Samples In Your Light
Picking color from a 2×2 inch chip is the single biggest cause of repaint regret. We supply 11×14 peel-and-stick samples for every candidate color, and we paint 2×2 ft test patches on the actual wall when you want to be sure. You live with the samples for 24–72 hours, see them at sunrise, noon, golden hour, and lamplight, and confirm before any final paint hits the wall.
Final Written Palette Delivery
You leave with a written palette: exact color names, codes, brand, sheen, room assignments, and notes. If you book the painting project with us, the palette becomes the spec sheet for the crew. If you decide to paint it yourself or hire someone else, the palette is yours to keep. No lock-in.

Learn MoreWhen Should You Schedule a Color Consultation?
A color consultation is the right starting point for almost any project — here are the moments it matters most.
- You have been stuck on a color decision for weeks — the longer you sit on it, the harder the decision feels; an outside designer eye usually breaks the loop in one visit
- You are about to paint a whole house — getting the room-to-room flow right up front saves a $5,000 repaint later when you realize the colors do not coordinate
- You just bought the house and inherited someone else's palette — we help you decide which existing colors to keep and which to update, room by room
- You renovated and now nothing matches — new flooring, cabinets, or trim throws the old palette off; we rebuild it around the new fixed elements
- You are planning to sell — we help you pick neutral-but-warm palettes that show well to buyers without erasing the character of the home
- You bought a new construction or builder-grade home — flat builder white on every wall is the most common situation we walk into; we add warmth without losing brightness
A consultation usually pays for itself in time saved from indecision and money saved from not painting the wrong color twice. Even if you decide to do the painting yourself, the written palette is a deliverable you keep forever.

Common Questions About Color Consultations
How long is a color consultation?
60–90 minutes in your home. We bring large-format deck books with 500+ swatches from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore, look at your lighting and fixed elements, and leave you with a written palette. Most homeowners book a single visit covering 3–5 rooms or a whole-house exterior; longer or larger projects can be split into two visits without extra cost.
Do you charge for the consultation?
$150 flat for a standalone consultation covering up to 5 rooms or a whole-house exterior. Free when bundled with any paid painting project from us — the $150 credits back to your deposit. Additional rooms beyond 5 are $25 each, capped at $75 total per visit.
Will you help me match my furniture and trim?
Yes — that is the entire point. We work outward from your fixed elements (flooring, cabinets, fireplace surround, sofa, art) and build the palette around those undertones. A warm-cherry floor wants a different white than a cool-white-oak floor, and an outside designer eye catches undertone clashes that are easy to miss when you have lived with the room for years.
Can I see colors on my actual walls before committing?
Yes. We supply 11×14 peel-and-stick samples for every candidate color in every consultation, plus we paint 2×2 ft test patches on the actual wall when you want a real-light read before final approval. You live with the samples for 24–72 hours and see them at every time of day before committing.
Do you do whole-house palettes?
Yes — whole-house palettes are the default. Most consultations cover 3–5 rooms with coordinated wall, trim, and accent colors so the whole house flows. Single-room consultations are also available if you have already decided on the rest of the house. We treat the palette as a set, not a series of independent picks.
What if I do not like the colors you suggest?
Then we keep narrowing until you do. The 60–90 minute visit is yours, not a sales pitch. We bring options, you push back, we narrow. Most consultations end with a different choice than the homeowner walked in with, because real-light samples change what you think you want. If the visit ends without a palette you love, you do not pay.
Will my consultation work if I plan to paint it myself?
Yes. The $150 includes the written palette as a deliverable you keep, with exact color names, codes, brand, sheen, and room assignments. Whether you book the painting with us, hire someone else, or DIY the project, the palette is yours. Most homeowners who consult with us end up booking the painting too, but it is not required.
Color Approaches We Use
Three ways we structure the palette depending on what you want the home to feel like.
Whole-House Coordinated Palette
One primary wall color, one secondary (often softer or lighter) for transitional rooms, one trim/millwork color, and one accent. Rooms flow into one another because the palette was designed as a set. Best for open-concept homes and homes where you spend time in every room.
Single-Room Accent Refresh
When the rest of the house is fine but one room needs a bigger statement — a deeper bedroom color, a navy office, a green dining room. We coordinate the accent so it speaks to the rest of the house without clashing.
Exterior + Trim Coordination
Whole-house exterior consultation: siding/stucco/brick color + trim color + door color + shutter color, coordinated as a set. We bring vinyl-safe color decks if you have vinyl siding, and we walk the exterior to see how the colors will read against the sky and landscape.
2-Year Workmanship Warranty
Every Northern Star Painters color consultation is backed by an unconditional satisfaction guarantee. If the 60–90 minute visit ends without a palette you genuinely love, you do not pay — no $150, no rebooking pressure, no awkward conversation. The promise is simple: walk away with a palette you are confident in, or walk away with no charge.
When you do book the painting project with us, the consultation cost credits 100% toward your deposit, and the written palette becomes the spec sheet for the crew. The same designer who built the palette is available during the project for any color tweaks, sheen questions, or trim coordination details. Color is the most reversible part of any home update, but it is also the most visible — we treat it with the seriousness it deserves.
