Drywall Repair Services by Northern Star Painters
Welcome to Northern Star Painters, the drywall repair specialists for homeowners across Northern Virginia and Washington DC. We are a Virginia Class A licensed and DC licensed contractor with an in-house crew — never subcontracted — trained on every type of drywall damage from hairline cracks to full-panel replacement. Whether you have a doorknob hole, water damage, settling cracks, or a popcorn ceiling that needs to come down, we handle it as part of one project with one warranty.
Drywall repair goes wrong when the patch shows through the new paint — visible compound lines, uneven texture, or a telegraphed seam. We do three-coat skim work with feathered edges, sand to a uniform surface, and prime so the new paint reads as one continuous wall. Most painting contractors subcontract drywall work, charge twice, and offer no unified warranty. We do it in-house in 32 cities across the DC and NoVA region.
Our Drywall Repair Process
Six steps that turn drywall repair from a visible patch into an invisible restoration.
Damage Assessment
We walk every damaged area with a flashlight and a moisture meter. Hairline cracks at corners and around windows usually mean settling. Water stains mean an active or past leak that needs to be fixed first. Mushy or soft drywall means active moisture and a roofer or plumber needs to be called before we patch. We tell you what we found, what we can fix, and what needs another trade.
Patch Holes & Cracks
Small holes (under 3 inches) get a self-adhesive mesh patch and three-coat compound. Larger holes get a piece of replacement drywall cut to fit, screwed to the surrounding studs or to a furring piece, and taped at the seams. Hairline cracks get cut open with a v-notch tool so the compound can lock into the substrate, not just bridge the surface.
Embed Tape Where Needed
Seams between original drywall and patch drywall get paper tape (stronger than mesh on flat seams) embedded in compound. Inside corners get paper tape folded into the corner; outside corners get a metal or vinyl corner bead screwed in. The tape is what keeps the seam from re-cracking when the substrate moves seasonally.
Three-Coat Skim & Feather
Three coats of joint compound, each thinner than the last, feathered out a foot or more from the patch on every side. The first coat fills, the second coat smooths, the third coat blends. We use lightweight compound for the first two and topping compound for the final coat — smoother sanding, less dust. Each coat dries 12–24 hours before the next.
Sand To Smooth Surface
We sand the dried compound with a pole sander (200–220 grit), then a hand-sanding block on the feathered edges. The transition from patch to surrounding wall has to be invisible to the eye and to the light — we check by raking a flashlight across the wall at a low angle, which exposes any unevenness. Sand until the surface reads as one continuous plane.
Prime For Paint Readiness
Bare compound is more porous than surrounding painted wall and will read as a flat spot under any color. We spot-prime every patch with a high-build drywall primer (Sherwin-Williams ProBlock or Benjamin Moore Fresh Start). The primer equalizes the porosity so the new paint covers uniformly. If we are also painting the wall, we then apply two coats of finish. If you are painting yourself, we leave the wall primed and ready.
How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost in Northern Virginia & DC?
Drywall repair pricing varies widely with damage type and size. Small patches (doorknob holes, nail pops) run $75–$200 each. Medium repairs (multiple cracks, water-stain patches, baseboard-height damage) run $300–$800 per room. Large repairs or full-panel replacement runs $500–$1,500 per panel. The most accurate way to know your number is a free in-home estimate.
- Damage type and size — hairline crack vs nail pop vs doorknob hole vs water-damaged panel vs full ceiling collapse
- Number of repair sites — one big patch is faster per square foot than ten small patches scattered across rooms
- Ceiling vs wall work — ceiling repairs are more labor-intensive (scaffolding, drying time, gravity issues with compound)
- Texture matching — smooth walls (cheapest), knockdown texture (mid), heavy orange-peel or popcorn (most matching work)
- Painting after repair — spot-prime only (cheapest), full wall repaint (mid), full room repaint (most complete coverage)
- Substrate condition — intact studs and joists (standard), studs that need sistering, or joists with rot (priced separately)

Learn MoreWhen Should You Repair Your Drywall?
Most drywall damage gets worse with time — here is when to act.
- Doorknob hole or impact damage — visible from the doorway and gets worse with every door swing; quick fix that takes 1–2 hours
- Hairline cracks at corners — usually settling; if they are not getting wider month to month they are stable, but they look unprofessional and are cheap to fix
- Nail pops in walls or ceilings — the drywall nail has worked loose; left alone the pop spreads and pulls the surrounding compound
- Water-stained drywall after a leak — once the leak is fixed and the substrate is dry, the stain still needs to be replaced or primed-and-painted to disappear
- Popcorn ceiling you want gone — popcorn removal includes drywall repair after the texture is scraped; we handle the whole project as one job
- Sagging or bulging drywall — sign of failed fasteners, water damage, or substructure issue; do not paint over, fix the cause first
A few situations need another trade first. Active water leaks need a roofer or plumber before we patch. Mold visible on drywall needs a remediation contractor (we will not paint over visible mold). Structural cracks wider than ¼ inch that change with the seasons may need a structural engineer. We tell you when you need someone else before you need us.
Why Northern Virginia & DC Homeowners Choose Northern Star for Drywall Repair
✅ In-House Crew, Never Subcontracted
Every Northern Star painter is on our payroll and trained on drywall-specific patching, taping, three-coat skim, and texture matching. Most painting contractors subcontract drywall work, charge twice, and give you two warranties to chase.
✅ Repair + Paint, One Project, One Warranty
We do the drywall repair and the painting in the same project with one crew. The patch is invisible to your eye and to the paint — because the same hand that smoothed the compound applied the topcoat.
✅ Three-Coat Skim with Feathered Edges
Three coats of compound, each thinner than the last, feathered a foot or more from the patch. Lightweight compound first, topping compound last. This is what makes a patch invisible under finish paint.
✅ Flashlight QA on Every Patch
We rake a flashlight across the wall at a low angle before priming — the only reliable way to expose unevenness in the compound. Anything we see, we re-sand. The patch has to read flat under raking light.
✅ 2-Year Workmanship Warranty
Written into every contract. If a patch cracks, telegraphs, or shows through the new paint within 24 months from workmanship causes, we come back at no charge.
✅ Same-Week Scheduling
Most drywall repair projects start within 3–7 business days of contract signing. Small patches can sometimes be done same-week. We do not lose weeks to scheduling games.

Common Questions About Drywall Repair
Can you repair drywall and paint as one project?
Yes — this is our default. We do the drywall repair and the painting as one project with one in-house crew. The patch is invisible to your eye and to the paint because the same person who smoothed the compound applied the topcoat. Most painting contractors subcontract drywall work, charge twice, and offer two warranties; we do it in-house with one warranty.
How long does drywall repair take?
Small patches (doorknob hole, nail pop) take 1–2 hours for the patch, then 12–24 hours per compound coat to dry, then sanding and prime. Total elapsed time from arrival to paint-ready is usually 2–3 days. Larger or multiple-room damage runs 3–7 days total elapsed.
Will the patch show through the new paint?
Not if it is done right. The two reasons patches show through new paint are: (1) the compound was not feathered far enough out from the patch, leaving a visible edge; (2) the compound was not primed before painting, leaving a flat spot under any color. We feather every patch at least 12 inches in every direction and we spot-prime every patch before paint. The patch is invisible to your eye.
Can you match texture (knockdown, orange peel, popcorn)?
Yes — we match smooth, knockdown, orange-peel, and skip-trowel textures. Texture matching is included in the project quote. Popcorn ceiling we typically recommend removing entirely rather than matching, because popcorn texture often contains asbestos in pre-1985 homes and is also visually dated. We do popcorn removal as a separate service.
Do you handle water damage?
Yes, once the leak is fixed. We will not patch over an active leak — it just traps the water and makes the repair fail. We coordinate with a roofer or plumber to identify the leak source, let the substrate dry to under 12% moisture, then cut out water-damaged drywall, replace with new drywall, tape, three-coat skim, sand, prime, and paint. Most water-damage projects run 3–5 days.
What if I find mold behind the drywall?
Visible mold needs a remediation contractor first — we will not paint over mold. Mold spores are a health and structural concern that requires proper containment, removal, and post-remediation air testing. After remediation is complete and the area is cleared, we come in and do the drywall repair and painting as the finish step.
How much does drywall repair cost in NoVA and DC?
Small patches (doorknob holes, nail pops) run $75–$200 each. Medium repairs (multiple cracks, water-stain patches, baseboard-height damage) run $300–$800 per room. Large repairs or full-panel replacement runs $500–$1,500 per panel. Whole-room rebuilds (full water damage or popcorn removal + repair) run $1,500–$4,500 per room including paint. Free in-home estimates.
Drywall Damage Types We Handle
Three failure modes that show up in almost every Northern Virginia home.
Doorknob & Impact Holes
The most common repair. A door swung open hard punches a knob-sized hole through the drywall. We back the hole with a piece of replacement drywall or a mesh patch, three-coat compound, sand smooth, and prime. Invisible under the new paint. 1–2 hours plus drying time.
Settling & Substrate Cracks
Hairline cracks at corners, above doorways, and around windows usually mean the house has settled. If they are not getting wider, they are stable and just need v-notching, taping, and three-coat skim. We embed paper tape so the crack does not telegraph back through the new paint within 12 months.
Water-Damaged Drywall
After a roof or plumbing leak, water-stained or softened drywall needs to come out, not just be painted over. We cut to the nearest stud, replace with new drywall, tape, three-coat skim, sand, prime, and paint. The wall reads as if the damage never happened.
2-Year Workmanship Warranty
Every drywall repair project from Northern Star Painters is backed by a written 2-year workmanship warranty. If a patch cracks, telegraphs through the new paint, or shows visible flaws from workmanship within 24 months of project completion, we come back at no charge and make it right. The warranty is included in your contract. Combined with $2 million in liability insurance, our Virginia Class A and DC contractor licenses, and our three-coat skim process, it is the most complete coverage you can get on residential drywall repair in the region.
The warranty does not cover damage from new impact (a child throws a toy, a door hits the wall again), water damage from a new leak that opens after our work is done, or settling cracks that appear in a previously-undamaged area after our project. But those are exactly the kinds of new issues that a fresh inspection can address — we are happy to come back for follow-up patches as a future project. Two years of workmanship coverage is the standard a serious crew should be willing to put in writing on every drywall repair.
